Ph.D. Program in Auxiliary Historical Sciences

What can you expect from the Ph.D. program in Auxiliary Historical Sciences?

“I chose the Ph.D. program in Auxiliary Historical Sciences because it brings together knowledge not only from history, but also from the social and natural sciences. It trains students to assess the authenticity of historical sources and to evaluate the value of the information they contain, which is especially important in today’s post-truth era.”

Tips for successful admission

  • Learn about the department and its research activities.

Applicants are advised to familiarize themselves with the research conducted at the institution and its profile before submitting their application. More information can be found in the About Us section.

  • Identify and contact your potential supervisor.

Applicants typically identify a potential supervisor before submitting their application, consult with them on the topic of their dissertation, and the research project. A list of supervisors can be found here. It is also possible to have supervisors from other departments; however, they must be approved by the Doctoral Board of the Faculty of Arts.

  • Submit your application

Admissions to doctoral study programs take place twice a year: applicants submit electronic applications from 1st until the 31st of May (for studies starting in the autumn semester) and in November (for studies starting in the spring semester).

  • Submit the required documents

For the admissions procedure, the following documents must be submitted, also in printed form, to the admissions Office of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (Arna Nováka 1, 602 00 Brno):

      • A structured CV, including confirmation of completion of a Master’s degree. If the admissions process takes place before the date of the final state examination and thesis defence, a confirmation of having fulfilled all academic requirements must be provided.
      • A research project proposal, which must include a title of the disseration, an abstract, keywords, definition of the research field, research questions and their theoretical and methodological foundations, a statement on the relevance of the topic, its interdisciplinary scope and international potential, including the possibility of cotutelle, contact details of the host institution/contact person for the intended research stay abroad, a work plan, and a selected bibliography on the topic.
      • A list of publications, including active participation in academic workshops and conferences.
